All Gender Toilets - Gender Neutral

Posted by Bractile on

All gender toilets also known as gender neutral toilets, are sanitary facilities that can be used by everyone. They do not have gendered signage and do not require the person using them to define into a gender.

Some all gender toilets can be accessible, can include baby change facilities or showers.

It is noted that all gender toilets are not officially recongnised in the Building Code of Australia (NCC). Therefore, if proposed on a project, the all gender toilet must be addressed as a performance based solution to ensure it complies with the performance requirements. Typically all gender toilets are installed along side single gender toilets, accessible toilets as they provide the opportunity for people to make choices about which toilet they may need or prefer to use based on their individual requirements.

Some perceive that all gender toilets are the same as unisex toilets which can be used by anyone, however this is not the case. All gender toilets provide a space for people who may not feel comfortable or safe using male, female or unisex toilets, and assist with making the community more inclusive. They also reduce bathroom anxiety experienced by many users.

All gender toilets have been installed at Rod Laver Arena within Melbourne Park. Many universities are now also installing all gender toilets to ensure they promote an inclusive environment as part of their social responsibility.
