How to Install Braille and Tactile Signs

Posted by Bractile on

Braille and tactile signage provides great benefit for all building occupants within a building. When information is provided for use by people of all abilities everyone can safely move to their desired location without any issues or difficulties.

All signs should be installed at a reachable height with braille and tactile characters. The international symbol of access also known as the wheelchair symbol, consists of a blue square and a white wheelchair. This symbol complies with the international standard ISO 7001 and the Australian standard AS1428.1-2009.

Signage must be provided next to each airlock door to identify the locations of the accessible toilets, accessible adult change facilities, male toilets, female toilets, ambulant toilets or cubicles.

Braille & tactile characters on signs are to be located between 1200mm and 1600mm above the floor level, on the latch side of each accessible door, and between 50mm and 300mm from the architrave or door frame if no architrave is provided.

Where the facility includes a toilet or shower etc. it should provide a pictogram representing the available facilities within the room.

The “LH” or “RH” required for accessible toilets indicates the direction of transfer from a wheelchair to the toilet seat.
