Is braille and tactile required on signage?

Braille and tactile is required on signage within an accessible building.

Clause D3.6 of the BCA states braille and tactile signage is required to identify the following within accessible buildings:

  • sanitary facility, except sanitary facilities in a bedroom of a Class 1b, 3 or 9c building.
  • space with a hearing augmentation.
  • each fire exit door provided with an exit sign.
  • accessible unisex sanitary facility.
  • ambulant accessible sanitary facility.
  • accessible adult change facility
  • non-acccessible pedestrian entrance and a accessible pedestrian entrance.
  • at a bank of sanitary facilities without an accessible unisex sanitary facility or accessible adult change facility.

The braille and tactile signage may have directional arrows to inform people with a disability where they are required to go to find the accessible facilities.
